Dr. Alice A. Christie's Web Site Publishing Tips

Publishing your Web site to the COE server

Before publishing your site review all of the files and folders in your site to ensure that:

  • none of the file names include spaces, commas, slashes, question marks, or other "extended" characters [(~!@$%^&*{}:;\ /+'<>?)]
  • none of the file names have extra periods (dots) or extra extensions, e.g., fav.math.sites.html, horse.jpeg.jpeg, cat.gif.gif
  • each file name length does not exceed 8 characters
  • each HTML file name ends with .htm or .html
  • each GIF file name ends with .gif
  • each JPEG file name ends with .jpg or .jpeg
  • all folders and file names are lowercase letters
  • your home page is named index.html (Do not use the file name index.htm.)
  • all other image files, files for download (e.g., pdf, doc) are in subfolders
  • you have removed all temporary and test files that are not part of your site
  • your Web site complies with all ASU policies on computer use. (The COE Server may only be used for non commercial purposes and copyright laws must be followed. Violations may result in anything from warnings to immediate deletion of accounts and stored files and reports to the University and proper authorities.)

  3. Click the top Quickconnect button. Once connected, you will see in the Remote site window a folder icon and a robots.txt file.
  4. In the left window, browse to your Local site location. The files and folders in the site will appear below.
  5. Highlight and then drag the files and folders in the Local Site you want to transfer to the Remote Site to the folder icon in the Remote site window.
  6. The window above the Local site and Remote site windows will indicate the action taken and whether the upload was successful.

Using Fetch to publish your Web site from a Mac computer

(When you connect to the COE server using an FTP program, you will automatically connect to your specific folder on the server.)

  3. Once connected, the remote site window will open. Click the Put Files Button to upload your files and folders.
