Model Lesson in Social Studies
  • Common Core Standards: Reading Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies 6–12
    • Craft and Structure 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
    • Integration of Knowledge and Ideas 7: Integrate visual information (e.g., in charts, graphs, photographs, videos, or maps) with other information in print and digital texts.
  • Lesson Topic
    • Learning about History, Culture, and Architecture through charts, cut-away drawings, and cross-section drawings
  • Lesson Objectives
    • To determine the meaning of words and phrases through charts and drawings
    • To integrate visual information with other information in print and digital texts
  • Time frame:
    • Assessing prior knowledge: 5 - 10 minutes
    • Group Activitiy: 15 minutes
    • Sharing/Assessment: 5 - 10 minutes
    • Total: 25 - 35 minutes
  • Assessing Prior Knowledge
  • Group Activity:
    • Each small group will explore a different topic primarily through illustrations, and secondarily through text
    • They will discuss their impressions with one member of the group taking notes in Notes or Pages or Evernote
    • Their goal is twofold: to learn about a topic unfamiliar to them through illustrations, and to discuss their experiences learning through illustrations rather than learning exclusively from reading text.
    • Create a Keynote presentation on one particilar illustration that amazed and fascinated the group to share with other groups
